Reims

Reims (pronounced Rahns), is steeped in history. As an ancient Roman city, it was extremely important when Caesar conquered Gaul. French kings came here to be crowned, and it's said that the French nation was born here in 498 A.D . A thousand years later in 1429 Joan of Arc escorted Charles VII  to Reims. Today, most people visit Reims because it's the centre of an important wine-growing district; its world renowned champagne is present at celebrations all over the world. The city (pop. 185,000) is overflowing with swank restaurants, ritzy champagne houses, large squares, and long, tree-lined avenues.  Many experts agree that the champagne bottled here is the lightest and subtlest in flavour in the world. Make time to linger, and explore the vineyards and wine cellars, the historic Gothic monuments, and the battlefields of the past.
