Learn French in Chamonix France

Chamonix-Mont Blanc

Chamonix is the historic capital of Alpine skiing. At an altitude of 1,027m (3,422 ft.), Chamonix  is the resort to choose if you're not a millionaire! Chamonix lies in one of the most spectacular valleys of the French Alps. Reminiscent of the Himalayas, the area is dominated by deeply crevassed glaciers and the cloud-diademed peak of Mont Blanc. The Aigulle du Midi, a solitary spire of rock near Mont Blanc's summit, has picture-postcard views.

In late spring and summer, the glaciers and high-altitude snow and ice serve as a backdrop for meadows and hillsides carpeted with wildflowers, shrubbery and trees. This is the best time for hiking; in winter, travellers can take advantage of lengthy downhill and cross-country skiing trails.

It is the site of the first Winter Olympic Games, in 1924, and Chamonix is still famous for its skiing and amazing mountains. Yet with its lakes and hiking it has also grown into a hugely popular summer destination . Chamonix is in a valley almost at the junction of France, Italy, and Switzerland. Skiers the world over know its 19km (12-mile) Vallée Blanche run, one of the most rugged, and the longest, in Europe. With exceptional equipment -- gondolas, cable cars, and chairlifts -- Chamonix is among Europe's major sports resorts, attracting an international crowd. Thrill seekers also flock here for mountain climbing and hang gliding. A charming old-fashioned mountain town, Chamonix has a breathtaking backdrop, Mont Blanc, western Europe's highest mountain at 4,734m (15,780 ft.).
